Some Simple STEM Examples

One of our teaching collaborators, Evan, demonstrates two simple Kookaberry apps that use inbuilt and external environmental sensors to perform some useful tasks. The first is a Compass app that uses the Kookaberry’s internal magnetometer. The second example will automatically water plants using a soil moisture sensor and a small water pump controlled by the Kookaberry.

Enhancing Diversity in STEM Education

A foundational motivation for AustSTEM is to engage with and encourage students to pursue careers in the STEM disciplines.  Engaging with the whole diversity of our young population increases the likelihood of attracting the best and the brightest. For some years AustSTEM together with the Open Systems Education Trust (OSET) has contributed to delivering an annual STEM Camp for Girls …

How Safe is the Air We Breathe?

The quality of the air we breathe is a major determinant of our health, over both the long and short terms. The catastrophic Australian bushfires filled our air with harmful particulates. Rising atmospheric carbon dioxide is warming our planet leading to potentially harmful climate change. In indoor spaces, a high carbon dioxide level indicates insufficient ventilation, and a higher risk …

Music Reinforces STEM Skills

It is well known that the study of music reinforces STEM skills.  Rhythm, tempo, pitch and harmony are all mathematical concepts. AustSTEM has produced lesson plans and apps that are oriented to music.  Apps such as Metronome and MoveMusic are examples. Our sponsorship of 3rd-year engineering student projects at the University of Wollongong during 2021 has produced a design for …

The Buzz About Beehives

AustSTEM regularly sponsors 3rd year Electrical Engineering student projects at the University of Wollongong.  The students get to work on some real-life educational projects while being mentored by AustSTEM.  AustSTEM benefits from their great ideas, their enthusiasm, and of course the educationally valuable material they create. Covid lockdowns during 2021 made the projects especially difficult.  Students could not be on …

Get Kookin’ With Kookaberry

One of our keen supporters, Renee Noble, gave an inspiring talk about how she took the journey to Kookaberry enlightenment in her role as a teacher of STEM subjects.  Her talk is available as part of the PyConline AU 2021 conference videos at this link: https://youtu.be/tTetLA0CZls. In her talk she shows examples of the class exercises she has used, particularly …
