The STEM Experiential Learning Journey

The STEM Experiential Learning Journey (the STEM Journey) is a whole-of-school programme introducing real world data and technology to subjects across the curriculum from Stage 3 onwards.

By taking the STEM Journey, teachers and their students will develop the practical skills to assess and draw conclusions based on real-world data and evidence, and be able to apply those skills in novel situations.

It is supported by a Kookaberry Class Set and, most importantly, two Kookaberry teacher accreditation courses

Stages of the STEM Journey

The STEM Journey starts in the last years of primary school, and provides, amongst other things, continuity of STEM learning over the abrupt change of teaching practice between primary and secondary education.

Students can customise existing code, or create new code, using the KookaSuite code editors. They can start with the KookaBlockly graphical code editor before moving to the KookaIDE text based, MicroPython, editor.

Evidential Skills Development

By taking the STEM Journey, students will develop the practical skills to assess and draw conclusions based on real-world evidence and be able to apply those skills in novel situations.

These analytical skills are essential pre-requisites for successful lives and careers in our knowledge-based society.

Starting the STEM Journey

The first step is for your school to purchase at least one kit of 15 Kookaberries which includes all the accessories and sensors to enhance most lesson plans and units of work.

The next step is for at least two teachers (one to back up the other) to become accredited Kookaberry teachers.

Teacher Accreditation

Accreditation is essential to ensure that the Kookaberry does not end up in the dreaded store cupboard unused and unloved!

The course will deliver at least 4 hours of professional learning and include at least 1 hour of on-line mentoring and support.

It will familiarise teachers with the operation of the Kookaberry; its apps; and website features, and will guide them through its use in a sample lesson plan.

On completion of the course, teachers will be given provisional accreditation as a Kookaberry teacher.

Full accreditation will be granted upon receipt of confirmation from their leadership team that they have successfully delivered a lesson incorporating the Kookaberry.

Support along the STEM Journey

This Kookaberry website will be continually updated and augmented though the addition of Apps and Lesson plans submitted both by AustSTEM and third parties.

Extension kits are being designed to be used as a resource in support of the iSTEM syllabus and STELR modules. Other resource kits will be developed in response to demand.

Additional online tutorials covering coding and other advanced features are in the planning stage.
